An underground economy for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.
Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could assist individuals reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries
However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.
Several experts stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Content Elimination
Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was committed to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Operations
Investigations also discovered communities with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or administering at home.
Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor shared contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Product Details and Costs
Within these groups, posts show black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a injector should be used, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it actively monitored dangerous content on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to current price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.
Her staff has already seen patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
