The Premier Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Spot.

On the surface, this work could seem more like a difficult academic challenge than a new pop project from a musician who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Broken into 4 different sections and sung in thirteen languages, we have a head-spinning orchestral-influenced opus investigating feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently through the prism of different saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among an extensive list of contributors. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars look quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to transcend overly academic chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, with full praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to fuse historical sounds and modern styles, its ambitions feel much greater here, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What really elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the iconic artist at her height, there is a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener into its tornado. Even when she is breaking your heart in two, the listener nevertheless want to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during the stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, and we hear a spontaneous laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds in with comedic impact. The track then shifts into the frenetic track featuring racing strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener rarely exactly know—or even want to predict—where it is going to next."

Almost every track concludes at a totally different point than where it started. A track explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous rhythmic style starts out moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Pop

A key balancing act of the album involves navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is no surprise that it has achieved her first release to break into the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a collection of truly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in the English language swells around a refrain that feels to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spirals upward. That feat gets echoed by a different expansive track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural impact of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux is pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for high artistry amid of looming artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of buried gems that takes time to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While some major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux is a sumptuous banquet at which the guests around it, some intoxicated on holy drink, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
