Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
