Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
