Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
