A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
